# Payaries vs BTCPay Server: hosted and managed, or self-hosted?

> This isn't two products competing for the same job. BTCPay Server is software you run and hold the keys for; Payaries is a service that runs the infrastructure and holds a dedicated wallet for you. The right choice depends on who you want carrying the operations.

## The short version

| | Payaries | BTCPay Server |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Hosted multi-chain gateway | Free, open-source payment processor you host yourself |
| Wallet control | Managed: a dedicated wallet per merchant per chain | Self-held: payments go to wallets you control |
| Who runs the servers | Payaries | You |
| Bitcoin Lightning | Not supported | Supported |
| Stablecoins on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Tron… | Core use case: USDT and USDC across several networks | Bitcoin-first; other coins arrive through plugins |
| Software cost | Fees configured per merchant; ask for a quote | No licence or per-transaction fee; you pay for hosting and operations |
| Integration | Signed REST API, Node SDK, webhooks; no store plugins yet | Plugins for common store platforms and an API |
| Withdrawals | Instruct a withdrawal to any address | Not needed — you already hold the funds |

## When BTCPay Server is the better choice

- You want **to hold your own keys** with no third party between customer and wallet.
- You are **Bitcoin-first** or need **Lightning**.
- You have **the skills to run a server** — upgrades, backups, node sync, key security — or an operator who does.
- You want **no per-transaction fee** and accept paying for infrastructure and time instead.

## When Payaries is the better choice

- You mostly accept **stablecoins across several networks** and don't want to run nodes or indexers for each. See [accepting USDT](https://www.payaries.com/usdt-payment-gateway).
- You don't want **gas management**: where the [gas station](https://www.payaries.com/blog/gas-station-network-fees) is on, you hold no native currency at all.
- You'd rather integrate **an API with documented failure states** than operate payment infrastructure.
- You need **separate Payaries wallets** managed for you, with withdrawals behind two-factor authentication and approval thresholds.

> **The trade-off, stated plainly.** With Payaries you depend on the provider's operations and controls — that's what a managed wallet means. Each merchant's wallet is dedicated and its balance is checkable on a block explorer, but you are not the one holding the keys. If that is a dealbreaker, self-hosting is the honest answer. Details in [managed vs self-held gateways](https://www.payaries.com/guides/custodial-vs-non-custodial-payment-gateway).

## Comparing cost honestly

"Free" software isn't free to operate. Price the server, the time to keep it patched and monitored, the cost of getting a key-handling mistake wrong, and the hours spent on gas and reconciliation across chains. Set that against a gateway's fee — then decide. Neither number is knowable from a blog post; both are knowable from a week of honest estimating.

## Questions

**Is Payaries an alternative to BTCPay Server?**
For teams that want someone else to run the infrastructure and manage wallets, yes — especially for stablecoins across several networks. For teams that want to hold their own keys, need Lightning or want no per-transaction fee, BTCPay Server is the better fit.

**Does BTCPay Server hold your funds?**
No. It is self-hosted and self-held: payments go to wallets you control. With Payaries the provider holds the wallet, a dedicated one per merchant per chain.

**Does Payaries support Lightning?**
No. Payaries supports on-chain payments on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum and Tron, plus Bitcoin deposits.
