# The new Tesla Roadster: what Tesla claimed, what is verified, and how a $50,000 reservation is paid

> Tesla showed its long-delayed Roadster on 15 October with rocket thrusters and a sub-second 0–60. Every number is Tesla's own, there is no price, and the reservation is a $50,000 card-and-wire deposit. Here is what was shown, what is and isn't verified, and what any business taking large deposits can learn from it.

## What Tesla showed on 15 October

Tesla streamed the unveiling of a redesigned next-generation Roadster on 15 October 2026, three days before this article. The reveal had slipped repeatedly: it was first promised for April, then moved to August and then 1 October. The livestream showed stunts — the car jumping and flipping on cold-gas thrusters — and few details. Specifications and trims followed on Tesla's X account and Roadster page. Tesla's design description includes hidden headlights, a full-width taillight, tinted windows it likens to a spacesuit visor, a steer-by-wire yoke, and magnesium, titanium and carbon fibre throughout.

| Trim | Seats | What it adds | 0–60 mph (Tesla's claim) | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | 2 | Active aerodynamics and a “multi-mode suction system” | Under 1.6 s | Reservations |
| Thrust | 2 | Rear cold-gas thrusters | Under 0.9 s | Limited release |
| Rocket | 1 | Perimeter thrusters; top speed over 230 mph | Under 0.59 s | Invite only; not approved for public roads |

Tesla quotes a range of over 300 miles without saying which trim it applies to. Battery size and weight were not given in the coverage we reviewed. Tesla did not announce a price for any trim. Elon Musk's only timing, relayed by Electrek, was that production starts in “2028, actually”.

## What changed since the 2017 promise

Tesla first showed a Roadster prototype in November 2017 and promised production in 2020. Set against that announcement, the 2026 car is a different proposition:

| | Promised in 2017 | Shown in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 620 miles | Over 300 miles |
| Top speed | Over 250 mph | Over 230 mph (Rocket trim) |
| Seats | Four (2+2) | Two at most |
| 0–60 mph | 1.9 s | Under 1.6 s (Performance trim) |
| Production | 2020 | 2028 (per Musk) |

## What is verified, and what is not

Nothing in the reveal has been independently tested, measured or reviewed by a regulator. Every performance, range and engineering figure — the thruster force, the downforce “approaching F1 levels”, the fans that hold the car upside down — is Tesla's claim. Electrek, which covered the event closely, calls the engineering real and the combination impressive but not new in its parts, and expects the stunt-capable trims to be rare and likely to void the warranty. That is Electrek's opinion, not a finding. The reasonable reading is that Tesla has shown a working demonstrator and a set of targets, and customers are being asked to pay today for a car that will not exist in production form for at least two years, at a price not yet announced.

## How the reservation is paid: card, then wire

Tesla reopened Roadster reservations at $50,000, the same figure it asked for in 2017. The structure reported by Electrek and Yahoo Finance is **$5,000 by card immediately, then $45,000 by wire within 10 days**. Tesla describes the $5,000 as fully refundable; one report notes the reservation is not final until the wire clears, and that the site did not say whether the $45,000 is refundable. Earlier depositors have reported messy refund experiences, according to Electrek and The Autopian. Read the order terms before sending money.

The split is deliberate. A card payment is quick but can be charged back and carries processing fees; a wire is slow but final. The shape — small instant commitment, large final transfer — is common for big purchases.

## Can you pay for a Tesla with crypto?

Tesla began accepting Bitcoin for vehicles in March 2021 and suspended it in May 2021, citing the environmental cost of mining. It has since been reported to accept Dogecoin for some merchandise. We found no announcement that Roadster reservations or purchases can be paid in crypto; check Tesla's order page for the current options.

It is still a useful question, because any merchant selling high-value goods is asked it. The answer depends on whether you have designed for the three things that go wrong with large crypto payments.

## What big-ticket deposits teach any merchant

- **One payment, one reference.** Give every reservation its own invoice and deposit address tied to your order or customer ID, so a $50,000 transfer is never ambiguous. On Payaries each invoice carries your own `referenceId` and a one-time address.
- **Lock the amount.** Quote in a fiat amount and fix the crypto amount for the payment window, so the price does not drift while the customer pays. Payaries locks the rate when the invoice is created.
- **Wait for confirmations before you credit.** A large payment should not be treated as received until it reaches the confirmations you require — see [crypto payment confirmations](https://www.payaries.com/guides/crypto-payment-confirmations).
- **Decide in advance what happens when the amount is wrong.** Customers underpay (exchange fees come out of the transfer), overpay and pay late. Write the policy down before the first deposit: [handling underpaid, late and unmatched payments](https://www.payaries.com/guides/handle-underpaid-and-late-crypto-payments).
- **Write the refund rule before you take the deposit.** A crypto refund is a new transfer to an address the customer gives you, not a reversal. State whether you return the same number of coins or the same dollar value — the two differ when the price moves. With Payaries you withdraw from your Payaries wallet to any address on demand.
- **Reconcile from signed events.** Credit orders from a verified webhook, not from a customer's screenshot — [verifying webhook signatures](https://www.payaries.com/guides/verify-crypto-webhook-signatures).

## Questions

**When will the new Tesla Roadster be produced?**
Elon Musk's stated timing, relayed by Electrek after the 15 October 2026 reveal, is 2028. Tesla has not published a delivery schedule, and earlier Roadster dates have slipped repeatedly since 2017.

**How much does the Tesla Roadster cost?**
Tesla has not announced a price for any trim. It reopened reservations at $50,000: $5,000 by card, then $45,000 by wire within 10 days. The Rocket trim is invite only.

**Are the Roadster's specs verified?**
No. Every performance, range and engineering figure is Tesla's own claim; the coverage we reviewed contains no independent testing or regulatory review. The Rocket trim is described as not approved for public roads.

**Can I buy a Tesla with Bitcoin or crypto?**
Tesla accepted Bitcoin for vehicles from March to May 2021 and then suspended it. It has been reported to accept Dogecoin for some merchandise. We found no announcement that Roadster reservations accept crypto — check Tesla's order page.
