# USDT on TRC-20, ERC-20 and BEP-20: what changes for a merchant

> It is the same dollar-pegged token on every network, but each is a separate asset with its own address format, gas coin and quirks. Here is what actually differs when you are the one receiving the payment.

## At a glance

| Network | Standard | Gas is paid in | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tron | TRC-20 | TRX | Widely used for USDT transfers; invoice minimum currently defaults to 30 USD where Payaries pays the gas |
| Ethereum | ERC-20 | ETH | The original; gas is usually the highest of the group; minimum defaults to 25 USD where Payaries pays the gas |
| BNB Smart Chain | BEP-20 | BNB | Low gas; USDT has 18 decimals here; minimum defaults to 5 USD where Payaries pays the gas |
| Polygon | ERC-20 compatible | POL | Low gas; same address format as Ethereum |
| Arbitrum | ERC-20 | ETH | Ethereum-compatible address; gas paid in ETH |

Minimums are admin-adjustable defaults at the time of writing and apply only where the gas station is on — read the live value from the API error rather than hard-coding it. Network fees move with congestion and prices, so compare live numbers, not a table from a blog.

## Four differences that bite

1. **A separate asset on each network.** `USDT_TRC20` and `USDT_ERC20` are different assets. A deposit address is valid for one network only, so the checkout must show the network next to the address.
2. **Decimals differ.** USDT has 6 decimals on Ethereum but 18 on BNB Smart Chain. If you build wallet payment links or amounts yourself, take decimals from the invoice, never assume.
3. **Gas is a different coin.** Moving USDT costs TRX, ETH, BNB or POL. Either keep a little in each Payaries wallet or use a chain where the [gas station](https://www.payaries.com/blog/gas-station-network-fees) pays it.
4. **Address formats overlap.** Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon and Arbitrum share the same `0x…` format. Tron's starts with `T`. Sending to the right-looking address on the wrong network is the most common way payments go missing.

> **Offer the network your customers already use.** Customers pay from an exchange or wallet that holds USDT on a particular network. Letting them choose avoids a bridging step they will skip — by sending on the wrong network instead.

## Accepting several networks with Payaries

Each network is its own asset ID in one API — you pick it per invoice, and your dedicated wallet on that network receives it. The full list is on the [USDT payment gateway page](https://www.payaries.com/usdt-payment-gateway), and `GET /v1/chains` is authoritative.

## Questions

**Is USDT on TRC-20 the same as USDT on ERC-20?**
Same token value, different assets on different networks. They have different address formats and gas coins, and one can't be sent to the other's address. A merchant creates an invoice for a specific network.

**Which USDT network should a merchant accept?**
The ones your customers already hold USDT on. Accepting more than one network removes the need for customers to bridge.

**What happens if a customer sends USDT on the wrong network?**
A deposit address is valid for one network only, so funds sent on another network do not reach the invoice. Show the network beside the address at checkout to prevent it.
