# From rally to rout: why Wall Street cheered the Democratic win and crashed a day later

> On Wednesday 4 November the Dow gained more than 1,500 points, its best day since April 2025, as the election uncertainty ended. On Thursday it gave all of it back, and more, as chip stocks fell about 10%. The market had not changed its mind about the election. It had changed what it thought the election meant for the biggest trade of the year, AI. Here is the two-day sequence, who won and lost on each day, and what moved in between.

## Wednesday 4 November: relief

> **Written 6 November 2026.** From CNBC, Schwab, Yahoo Finance and HuggingNews reports of 4 and 5 November. Wednesday's closing gains are as reported by those outlets, which round them differently. Payaries is a technology platform, not an adviser. This article reports public information and is not investment, tax or legal advice. Markets are moving quickly — figures below are as reported on the dates given, and the sources linked at the end are the place to check current levels.

CNBC reported the Dow up more than 1,500 points, about 3%, to above 53,000, its best day since April 2025. A later CNBC piece put the day's closes at roughly +3% for the Dow, +2% for the S&P 500 and +1.5% for the Nasdaq; HuggingNews has the S&P 500 up 1.56%. US and Brent crude each fell more than 8%, gold rose about 3.4%, and Treasury yields fell. Schwab's reading was that the “dramatic victory” of the Democrats ended election uncertainty and took pressure off Wall Street. Coverage also said investors had feared a contested result, and that President Trump accepting the outcome eased that fear. One strategist in the coverage said gridlock has historically been good for stocks.

The rally was not even. It sorted AI-linked stocks into two camps, which turned out to be the clue to Thursday:

| Wednesday winners | Wednesday losers |
|---|---|
| Hyperscalers that spend on AI: Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft each rose more than 4% (CNBC) | Neoclouds that rent AI computing: CoreWeave down about 9%, Nebius 6%, IREN 11% (CNBC) |
| Apple, Microsoft and Amazon, up at least 6% early (CNBC) | Power suppliers: GE Vernova down about 10%, Constellation Energy about 6% (CNBC) |
| Gold and Treasury bonds, as yields fell and oil dropped more than 8% (CNBC) | Trump Media, down about 11% premarket (CNBC) |

The logic was that a slower data-center build-out is bad for the companies that sell to it and good for the companies that pay for it, whose cash flow improves if they spend less. Analysts quoted by CNBC made exactly that argument, including RSM's Joseph Brusuelas, who said AI investment “needs to slow to a more sustainable pace”.

## What changed overnight

- **The scale of the exposure got put in numbers.** HuggingNews reports a UBS estimate that the election outcome could put about 30% of expected 2028 US data-center capacity additions at risk, and a Goldman Sachs warning that 45% of planned capacity could be threatened. Press coverage describes Goldman's figure as the share of planned capacity located in states likely to tighten rules, not a forecast of cancellations.
- **The political tone hardened.** CNBC reports Senator Bernie Sanders called for a national data-center moratorium, and HuggingNews says Democratic lawmakers called for restrictions up to a “ban on artificial superintelligence”. Goldman Sachs, per Fortune, still thinks a national moratorium is unlikely.
- **Earnings landed.** Qualcomm's results, out after the close on Wednesday, showed handset-chip revenue down 26%, below estimates, per market reports.
- **Positioning reversed.** Hedge funds sold the hyperscaler stocks they had bought in the rally, per HuggingNews, and long-only investors were described as “frozen”. Tim Holland of Orion told CNBC investors were “stepping away” until they could judge the effect on AI spending.

## Thursday 5 November: the reversal

By the open, selling hit everything tied to AI at once, not only the Wednesday losers. Yahoo Finance's Jared Blikre called it the Dow's worst second session after a midterm since 1896. Hyperscalers, which had been Wednesday's winners, fell with the rest, so the Wednesday argument that spenders would benefit did not survive the day. The full numbers are in [part 1](https://www.payaries.com/blog/us-stock-market-crash-november-5-2026).

| | Wednesday 4 Nov | Thursday 5 Nov (intraday) |
|---|---|---|
| Dow | Up about 3%, above 53,000 | Down about 3%, about 51,700 |
| S&P 500 | Up about 1.6% to 2% | Down about 3.8% to 4.2% |
| Nasdaq Composite | Up about 1.5% | Down about 5% |
| Oil | Down more than 8% | WTI back near $90 |
| Gold | Up about 3.4% | Up another 1% to 1.7% |
| Bitcoin | Above $80,000 | Down about 5% to about $76,000 |

## A reading of the whipsaw

This is our interpretation, not a forecast. Wednesday's rally priced the election as an event: the uncertainty was gone and gridlock looked benign. Thursday priced it as a policy shift: a Congress and a set of governors who campaigned against data centers, in a market where much of the year's gain rested on the build-out continuing. Both readings can be true in sequence. The market first took the relief, then read the detail.

It also shows how stretched the position was. When Truist's Keith Lerner says “the rubber band is becoming increasingly stretched”, he means that a lot of money was on one side of the same trade, so a small change in the story forces many people to move together. Whether that trade deserved its valuation is the subject of [part 7](https://www.payaries.com/blog/is-ai-a-bubble-evidence-for-and-against).

## Questions

**Why did stocks rise after Democrats won Congress?**
Coverage says the result ended election uncertainty and removed fears of a contested outcome. The Dow rose more than 1,500 points on 4 November, its best day since April 2025, per CNBC.

**Why did they crash the next day?**
Investors focused on what a Democratic Congress and new governors could mean for AI data-center construction, hedge funds sold what they had bought in the rally, and Qualcomm reported weak results. Chip stocks fell about 10%.

**Which stocks benefited from the Democratic win on Wednesday?**
The big spenders on AI, Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft, each rose more than 4%, per CNBC, on the idea that slower data-center spending would help their cash flow. Neoclouds and power suppliers fell.

**Did the market change its view of the election?**
Not about who won. Our reading is that it moved from pricing relief on Wednesday to pricing policy risk on Thursday.
