# What happens next: the dates, three scenarios and the signals that matter

> Nobody knows where US stocks go from here, and the sources are honest about that: strategists quoted after the crash talk about “more choppiness ahead” and a stretched “rubber band”. What can be done is lay out the dated events that will move things, three scenarios and what each would require, and the indicators that tell you which one is unfolding. Everything below is a framework for reading the news, not a forecast.

## The dates

> **Written 6 November 2026.** From CNBC, Yahoo Finance and Fortune reports of 4–5 November, plus one market roundup for the Nvidia date. Thursday 5 November figures are intraday readings from live reports. None of the sources reviewed gave official closing levels, so treat every move as approximate until you check a final close. Payaries is a technology platform, not an adviser. This article reports public information and is not investment, tax or legal advice. Markets are moving quickly — figures below are as reported on the dates given, and the sources linked at the end are the place to check current levels.

| When | Event | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 6 November | US non-farm payrolls report | CNBC names it a catalyst; a strong number raises rate-hike odds, a weak one raises growth fears |
| Coming days | Alaska and Mississippi Senate races called | Settles the Senate margin (Democrats at least 54, per CNBC) |
| 17 November (reported) | Nvidia quarterly results | One roundup puts the report on this date; it is the clearest read on AI chip demand. Confirm the date with the company |
| December | Fed meeting | CME FedWatch priced a rate hike at 70.1% on 5 November, down from 82.7% the day before |
| 3 January | New Congress convenes; House votes for speaker | Start of divided government; Jeffries is bidding for speaker |
| Not yet dated | Debt-ceiling fight | CNBC reports it is expected to be contentious, with analysts warning of bond-market volatility |
| Ongoing | State and local data-center decisions | Texas has paused new approvals and Ohio's Senate race turned on data centers; local ballot measures went 40 of 41 against development |

## Three scenarios

These are our framework for organising the evidence. We assign no probabilities, and a real outcome can combine them.

| | A. Orderly reset | B. Deeper correction | C. Quick rebound |
|---|---|---|---|
| The story | AI spending slows to a sustainable pace; stocks drift lower or sideways; leaders consolidate | A financing or earnings shock turns a correction into a bear market for the AI trade | The sell-off proves a positioning flush; compromise on data centers calms fears |
| What it needs | Data-center limits stay local; hyperscalers hold capex but cash flow improves | Borrowing costs rise, a neocloud fails, or Nvidia's results disappoint | Strong results, no federal moratorium, falling yields |
| Voices that fit | RSM's Brusuelas and BofA's Bhave on a gradual deflation | BofA's warning of a sustained correction as a global risk; Gartner on neocloud failures | AMD's Lisa Su on demand; CNBC's case that pushback helps |
| Who is hit | Chips and neoclouds; spenders relatively spared | Everything tied to AI, plus credit markets and the wealth effect | Short sellers |
| Signals | Capex guidance flat or lower; yields stable | Credit spreads widen; VIX stays above 25 | VIX falls back; chip index recovers its losses |

## The signals to watch

- **The volatility index (VIX).** It spiked to 26–28 on 5 November, the highest since 31 March. A drop back toward the low 20s would suggest calm is returning; staying high suggests stress.
- **Market breadth.** HuggingNews reports 118 stocks in the S&P 1500 fell at least 10% on Thursday, up from 50 the day before. If breadth narrows again, the sell-off is contained to AI; if it keeps widening, it is spreading.
- **Credit.** Watch borrowing costs for neoclouds and big AI developers. The most leveraged parts fail first.
- **Capex guidance.** The next earnings season will show whether Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta keep spending, as Alphabet's $195–$205 billion guidance did in October.
- **Rate expectations.** CME FedWatch priced a December hike at 70.1% on 5 November, down from 82.7%. Further falls in that number would ease pressure on bonds, gold and growth stocks; a rise would add to it.
- **Policy.** Whether federal Democrats converge on a moratorium or a compromise, and what Texas does.

## What a correction has meant before

The S&P 500 at about 7,380 to 7,690 this week is far above where it stood in April 2025, when the tariff sell-off that this one is compared with took stocks sharply lower, so the market has recovered from at least one comparable shock. HuggingNews notes this is the Nasdaq's second correction this year, and the first did not become a bear market. That is a data point, not a guarantee; some corrections do deepen, as the dot-com decline did from 2000 to 2002 (see [part 7](https://www.payaries.com/blog/is-ai-a-bubble-evidence-for-and-against)). Yahoo Finance's observation that this was the Dow's worst second session after a midterm since 1896 is a reminder that history gives context, not direction.

## What it means for households and businesses

- **Retirement savings** tied to index funds fall on paper in a sell-off and recover or not with the market; time horizon matters more than the day.
- **Borrowing costs** depend on yields and the Fed. If yields keep falling, mortgage and business loans may ease; if rate-hike odds rise, they will not.
- **Hiring** may soften in sectors adopting AI, per Goldman's analysis in Fortune.
- **Businesses that sell online** should keep payment options broad, so that one channel's trouble is not a revenue problem. ## Sources and as-of date

> **What we could not verify.** The Nvidia report date comes from a single market roundup and should be confirmed with the company. The scenarios are our framework, not forecasts, and the voices placed against them are the speakers' own views. The S&P 500 levels are intraday. The claim that the first Nasdaq correction of 2026 did not become a bear market is our reading of the index levels and HuggingNews's “second correction” statement.

## Questions

**Will the stock market recover after the 5 November 2026 crash?**
Nobody can say. The sources describe scenarios from an orderly reset to a deeper correction to a quick rebound. The Nasdaq's earlier correction this year did not become a bear market, but that is not a guarantee.

**What are the key dates to watch?**
Friday's US jobs report, the calls on the Alaska and Mississippi Senate races, Nvidia's quarterly results (reported as 17 November; confirm with the company), the December Fed meeting and the new Congress convening on 3 January.

**What signals show whether the sell-off is spreading?**
The VIX staying above 25, the number of S&P stocks falling 10% or more rising, wider credit spreads for AI borrowers, and falling capex guidance.

**Should I sell my stocks?**
This article does not give investment advice. It sets out dates, scenarios and indicators; your own situation and a qualified adviser should drive decisions.
