What is Meta Muse? Meta's AI agent explained

"Muse" is the name Meta Superintelligence Labs uses for its newest AI: a family of models and, since September 2026, a personal agent that books, buys and organises things for you. This is what it is and what is still unclear.

01The short answer

Muse refers to two related things. First, the Muse family of AI models built by Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), starting with Muse Spark. Second, Muse, the personal AI agent, an app powered by those models and designed to do work for you rather than just answer questions.

02The Muse family so far

Date (2026)ReleaseWhat it is
8 AprilMuse SparkThe first Muse model: a natively multimodal reasoning model with tool use, visual chain of thought and multi-agent orchestration. Available in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai.
9 JulyMuse Spark 1.1An upgrade built for agentic tasks, with gains in tool and computer use and coding, a 1-million-token context window, and developer access through Meta's Model API in public preview.
10 AugustMuse GlimmerAn open 30-billion-parameter agentic model, released under the Apache 2.0 licence, small enough to run on a computer with a single consumer GPU.
8 SeptemberMuse (the agent)The personal agent app, powered by Muse Spark, rolling out in the US.

03What the Muse agent does

According to Meta, Muse is built to do work for you. It can take on tasks like sending an email or booking travel, build a plan for a larger goal, open a browser, fill in forms and negotiate on your behalf. It keeps working after you close the app and comes back when something changes or it needs your approval, and it remembers what matters to you. You can message it in the Muse app or in WhatsApp.

It is an example of the agentic AI pattern: a goal, a plan, tools, and checkpoints with a human.

04How it is kept contained

You

Muse app or WhatsApp

Your own isolated Muse VM

Muse agent

plans and carries out tasks

Sentinel agent

approves what leaves the VM

The web and your apps

browser, email, checkout

Sensitive steps — sending an email, making a purchase — come back to you for approval first.

Each person's Muse runs in its own virtual machine; a separate Sentinel agent approves what leaves it.
  • An isolated virtual machine holds your agent, your data and the credentials for the services you connect, so no one else's agent can reach it.
  • A Sentinel agent on the same machine must approve anything Muse sends to the internet, and asks you when needed.
  • Approvals — Muse checks with you before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase, and shows an audit trail of what it has done and plans to do.
  • Passwords and payment details — Meta says Muse has no visibility into them; shared credentials go into secure storage it can use without seeing.
  • Ads — Meta says Muse doesn't share your conversations or VM data with its ad systems.
  • Control — you choose which apps it connects to, can disconnect them, tell it to forget things, and opt out of having your interactions used to train Meta's models.

05How Muse pays

Meta says Muse checks out with Link by Stripe using a one-time-use card, and that it is the first AI agent covered by Link's purchase protections. So Muse buys with a card rail, not crypto. The same shift — software that can complete a purchase — is why stablecoin payments to an address are also of interest for agents, as covered in what is agentic AI.

06Availability and cost

  • Where: rolling out in the US on iOS, Android and the muse.ai website, with AI glasses described as coming soon.
  • Cost: Meta says Muse is free for most of what people need, with subscription plans for people who want to do more. Reported plan prices vary between outlets, so check Meta.
  • For developers: Muse Spark 1.1 is available through the Meta Model API (public preview), and Muse Glimmer's open weights are on Hugging Face under Apache 2.0.

07What to keep in mind

An agent with access to your email and purchases is powerful and carries real risk: mistakes in long tasks, malicious instructions hidden in web pages, and the trust you place in the provider's safeguards. Meta's design — isolation, approvals, an audit trail — addresses these, but independent reviews will take time. Start with low-stakes tasks and keep approvals switched on.

Questions

What is Meta Muse?
Muse is the name of Meta Superintelligence Labs' family of AI models and of a personal AI agent app built on them. The agent does tasks for you, such as booking travel or sending email, instead of only answering questions.
What is Muse Spark?
Muse Spark is the first model in the Muse family, released on 8 April 2026. It is a natively multimodal reasoning model that supports tool use and multi-agent orchestration, and it powers the Muse agent.
What is Muse Glimmer?
An open agentic model from Meta with 30 billion parameters, released on 10 August 2026 under the Apache 2.0 licence. It is designed to run locally on a Mac or PC with a single consumer GPU.
Is Muse free, and where can I use it?
Meta says it is free for most uses, with paid plans for heavier use. It began rolling out in the US on iOS, Android and the web on 8 September 2026.
Is Meta Muse the same as Meta AI?
They are related but not the same. Meta AI is Meta's assistant, which also runs on Muse Spark. Muse is a separate personal agent designed to carry out multi-step tasks on your behalf.
